icelandic LAMBSome of you have likely heard by now our story of The Accidental Shepherd. In short, it goes like this:
We got sheep. By accident. Happily, we have fallen quite in love with these sweet, emotive creatures and have since expanded our flock. On purpose this time. Icelandic are an ancient breed of sheep from (you guessed it) Iceland. They are small and hardy and tri-purpose - meaning they can be used for meat, milk and wool. Whole Lamb is SOLD OUT for 2022. Sorry! Waitlist reopens August, 2023. |
a note regarding LIVE animal sales
We absolutely, positively, 100% WILL NOT sell our animals live for slaughter at your home or on our farm.
We won't change our mind, no matter how nice you ask, no matter how many times you ask, no matter if you call back in five minutes pretending to be someone else looking for a "pet". (Yes, that's really happened.)
We also do not sell animals in the following situations:
If you have zero farming experience.
We know you need to start somewhere, but if you're just getting started, please please start with something smaller and easier to manage than sheep.
If you own or are planning a petting zoo.
Petting zoos, in my humble opinion, are cruel and unnecessary.
Prey animals such as sheep are not meant to be subjected to an onslaught of stressful contact with folks they don't know. They are built, by nature, to be terrified of these sorts of encounters.
We also strongly encourage anyone considering this type of operation to recognize that a lack of responsibility regarding bio-security and animal care on one farm threatens the health and safety of every. other. farm in the community - and as we've learned in 2020 - potentially the world.
If you do not know what you are doing you can create a perfect storm for illness and infection - for both your animals and the rest of us.
Farming is not to be entered into lightly. Please be sure you are educated and responsible.
We have seen a huge uptick in these types of request over the past number of years, and I'm writing it here just in hopes I can save even one sharp phone exchange. (My farm family, y'all know how protective this Farm Mama is of her babes!)
